By Basics & The Magic of Merino!

I’m always on the lookout for brands that feel both thoughtful and effortless, and By Basics immediately caught my eye. This Danish label creates timeless pieces designed with intention and crafted in their own facilities in Poland, where every detail is carefully considered. What makes them truly special? Every garment is made-to-order, which means nothing is wasted, and there’s the option to custom order from our Boutique (ask us!).
Merino wool comes from Merino sheep, known for their incredibly fine and soft fleece. Unlike traditional wool, which can sometimes feel itchy or coarse, merino feels gentle against the skin, even for those with sensitivities or allergies. It’s the kind of fabric you want to wear every day in the cooler seasons.
What really fascinates me about merino is how smart it is. It naturally traps air between its fibres, creating a thermal buffer that keeps you warm when it’s cold and surprisingly cool when the weather is mild. And it manages moisture like a dream — wicking sweat away, letting your skin breathe, and drying quickly so you never feel clammy. On top of that, merino is odour-resistant, meaning your garments stay fresh wear after wear, perfect for busy days or travel.
Even in wet weather, merino continues to insulate. Unlike synthetic fabrics that lose their warmth when damp, these fibres keep working, making merino perfect for brisk walks, unexpected rain showers, or layering under a raincoat.
By Basics’ pieces are machine washable on a gentle cycle, air dry beautifully, and hold their shape thanks to natural elasticity.  Each garment is made with 100% mulesing-free wool, which means the sheep are never subjected to the painful mulesing process — an unnecessarypractice still used in some parts of the wool industry. Instead, By Basics sources their wool from farms that prioritize animal welfare, ensuring the sheep are treated with care and respect. Their wool is also OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified, free from harmful substances and safe for sensitive skin.
Wool isn’t just renewable, it’s completely circular, creating a closed loop that benefits everyone and everything involved.
Unlike synthetic materials that extract finite resources and create permanent waste, wool operates in harmony with natural systems. Every stage gives back, from carbon sequestration in grasslands to soil improvement when products decompose. The sheep stay healthy, the land stays productive, and we get incredible natural products. Then it all begins again, year after year.
This is what true sustainability looks like, not just doing less harm, but actively improving the system with every cycle.
If you’ve never experienced merino wool this way, trust me: once you do, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it.
Good vibes,
Aileen
